The legal aid bill currently stands at around £2.2 billion – a figure government officials desperately want to reduce. The Citizens Advice Bureau has warned that cutting the bill by £350 million would result in far fewer family law cases being heard in court. In fact, the charity has estimated that scrapping the provision of free advice and representation will reduce family-related cases from approximately 250,000 to just 40,000.

In the absence of legal aid, many people will not be able to initiate proceedings even if they have good cause to do so. Instead, families would have to rely on other forms of dispute resolution, such as mediation and therapy. There is also a chance that some litigants would end up representing themselves in court. Although legal aid will remain available for victims of domestic violence and forced marriage, the cuts are expected to significantly reduce access to justice.

Then with the approach of New Year’s Eve last year I sat down as I always do to write out my dreams and goals for the year. To clarify, lets use Bhutan as an example. Again, it need not matter should it be for play or for work, and again I implore you to get insurance for all of your trips.

Personally, I have only had the misfortune of having to make a claim once, knock on wood. I had my surfboard broken in transit to Portugal, and it was virtually brand new. The airline took no responsibility for the loss, and it was a complete loss as it was beyond repair. Securing a hire car prior to landing in Ibiza makes a lot of sense. Should you wait, you may find the experience to be taxing, even painful during high season. Maybe I should have started with that piece of information, it is rather compelling.

Rugs frequently have a tendency to curl up, slip and slide or have ends that flip over. This can not only be annoying, unsightly and the cause of angst, but a danger to those in your home. Luckily, those lightweight, travelling rugs can be controlled and you can be rid of the nuisance of having to fix them.

You may be a little surprised at how I choose to correct this problem, but rest assured it really works well. At each corner of the rug attach a pair of flat, cork bottomed rulers. With the cork side down, friction with your flooring will be created, and the weight of the ruler will also help to keep things where they belong.

Depending on the type of rug you have, or your ability with a thread and needle, the rulers can be affixed by either sewing them in place, or with heavy duty double sided tape. One way or another, should make no difference, and some of you would prefer not to sew into the rug in fear of effecting its value. The tape should have no long term inpact on the rug should you later chose to remove it.
